Glacier collision destroys dam in Uttarakhand: 125 missings, seven confirmed dead

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand after a glacier dam hit it, killing at least seven people and leaving dozens more dead.

The incident took place in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Sunday morning when a nearby village was flooded due to the dam's collapse, after which the surrounding villages were evacuated.

Videos shared on social media show floodwaters entering the area and wreaking havoc.

According to officials, the Rishi Ganga power plant project was almost completely destroyed in the incident while the Tapwano dam was also severely damaged. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Travinder Singh Rawat said in a press conference that seven bodies have been recovered so far. While 125 people are still missing while the search is on.

He said that about 180 sheep and goats have also been washed away from the accident site.

The tunnel collapsed after a glacier erupted in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, while floods swept through several areas, killing several people.

Glacier eruptions in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have wreaked havoc, with flash floods sweeping down the walls of the Rishi Ganga Power Project.

The eruption of the glacier caused flooding in the river Dholi Ganga, as a result of which doomsday passed on the residents of the river bank settlement in Chamoli district. ۔

The floods caused severe damage to the Rishi Ganga Power Project, the walls of which collapsed and machinery was also affected. The Indian government has issued a high alert from Chamoli to Haridwar in view of possible floods.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash said that after the glacier broke, there was a flood in Chamoli district, which affected the bridge under construction of BRO and the tunnel also collapsed.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have started work in the affected areas. During the rescue, SDRF volunteers rescued the young man trapped in the rubble of the tunnel several hours later.

Welfare volunteers conducted a rescue operation to evacuate people from the rubble of a tunnel that collapsed near the dam in Chamoli. Removed the trapped citizen. The citizen was happy to be alive again and he fell to the ground in joy.
