WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has signed into law an act that would provide 50 percent of scholarships to Pakistani women under the merit-based higher education scholarship program.

Earlier this month, the US Congress sent a bill to the White House for the president's signature.

A statement  "On January 13, the President signed into law the Malala Yousafzai Act, which provides scholarships to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) based on merit and needs Instructs to provide at least 50% scholarships to Pakistani women.

The bill was first passed by the House of Representatives in March last year, after which it was approved by the US Senate on January 1.

The bill directs the provision of 50% scholarships to Pakistani women from 2020 to 2022 under Pakistan's Higher Education Scholarship Program.

The scholarships will be available in a variety of subjects according to the qualification criteria.

Under the bill, USAID is required to consult and seek investment from Pakistan's private sector and the Pakistani community in the United States to expand and improve access to education in Pakistan.
