Tractor parade of thousands of protesting farmers on Republic Day:

Violent clashes during protests, appeal to farmers to return

Farmers protesting against new agricultural laws in India broke through various barriers and entered the capital, New Delhi, on Tuesday with their tractors, following reports of a farmer being killed in clashes with police.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amrinder Singh has condemned the violence and appealed to the farmers to return from Delhi.

Farmers' unions have also expressed dissatisfaction with the violent protests.

The farmers' organization Muttahida Kisan Morcha said in a statement: "It is unfortunate that despite all our efforts, some other organizations and some anti-social elements have joined the peace movement so far. Chambal has taken condemnation measures for violating the rules and discipline. We have always believed that peace is our greatest strength. Such moves harm the movement. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet that violence is not the solution to any problem.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amrinder Singh said in a tweet that the scenery in Delhi is amazing. Violent actions by some elements are unacceptable. This will harm the efforts of peaceful farmers. Farmer leaders have shown disengagement and suspended the tractor rally. I appeal to all real farmers to come out of Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party has also condemned the violence during the farmers' parade in Delhi. The party said it was unfortunate that the federal government had allowed the situation to be affected to such an extent.

The Aam Aadmi Party said in a statement that the movement had been going on peacefully for the past two months. Farmer leaders have said that those responsible for today's violence were not part of the movement but elements from outside. Whatever they were, the violence has certainly weakened the movement, which has so far been run with so much peace and discipline.
